About Me and Rustic Designs

Who am I? My name is Sharondale Humes. I am from Belize, central America. I am a wife of 19 years and mother of 4 children. Esther is 18 years old, Aaron is 15 years old, Kaylan is 12 years old and Hannah is 5 years old. My husband is Mark.

What is important to me?  I am a Christian and serving the Lord is most important in my life. I have sacraficed things in my life to give to the Lord through tithe and donations. After I have given to the Lord, I use a lot of the money I have earned for materials and products that I needed to expand my business. In the beginning, I used a hand saw to cut the coconuts, but thanks to the Lord's guidance and layaway, I was able to buy a scroll saw, bench grinder that I converted to a sander, sewing materials  and I now have 2 helpers.

Why did I start Rustic Designs? I started this business 3 years ago, but was not looking to start a business, I just liked doing things with my hands. One day, after much encouragement from my neighbors, I decided to make my designs and sell them to tourist and other people in my city.

One day, I was out in my backyard, looking at the top of a coconut. I noticed that it looked like a flower and the ideas started flooding my mind. I was full of possibilities. After a little time, I started using the shell of the coconut and even parts of the coconut palm. It did not take too long before I started to experiment with bamboo and Belizian local flower seeds.

An opportunity opened up for me to start vending my creations at a local resort, Black Orchid Resort, in my village. It is about a mile and half from where I live. I did not have a driver's license and a friend drove me there. After one month, she was not able to take me anymore, so I had to borrow a neighbor's bicycle to get there. I rode the bike while carrying the bags with my creations in them. I rode that bike for one year, but business was growing so fast, so I needed more.

I am starting this blog to showcase my creations and reach people outside of Belize and the Black Orchid Resort. As I am learning more about blogging, since I did not know anything about this before visiting family friends in Florida, I see opportunity to minister to others and share the Lord and His blessings with people all over the world. Please email me if you want to share stories of how the Lord has been present in your life, or if you want to know more about my Rustic Designs.
